We’ve all been there.
And if you haven’t, just pretend you have, to make the rest of us feel better.
You’ve scrubbed and bleached and done all the usual cleaning bits, but there are some gross-looking brown stains in your toilet that just won’t budge.
They make your loo look absolutely filthy, and you feel a strange need to tell guests that you really do clean your bathroom regularly, promise.
Those stains are usually down to limescale, and are more likely to occur when you live in hard-water areas (like London, where you are doomed to have a grubby looking toilet basin).
And finally, we may have a solution.
A member of the Extreme Budget DIY & Life Hacks group wrote that she was so ’embarrassed’ of her toilet that she felt anxious about people using it when they came over to her house.
That was until she discovered the Domestos Zero Limescale cleaner for just £2 from Wilko.
She wrote: ‘Imagine my horror when we brought our first house in May, went to the toilet horrified to find layers of limescale.
‘I have tried all sorts down the loo the last month or so and it hasn’t budged! Then today in Wilko saw the domestos zero limescale on sale for £2. I wish I had found it sooner!
‘That is just 30 minutes in the toilet and hardly any left!
‘I am actually amazed! If anyone is in a hard water area and in a similar position to us, go get the domestos! I am no longer embarrassed to let someone use my toilet!’
Turns out that wasn’t a one-time fluke – many others have commented that they’ve seen similarly impressive results from the product.
While the product worked to get rid of most of the stains in under 30 minutes, the woman then layered it over the remaining brown areas and left it overnight.
When she checked the next morning, her toilet was sparkling white.
‘When we moved in ours was worse than yours,’ another group member commented. ‘It was horrendous. To the point I thought it was going to be a new toilet.
‘Used this and I agree it’s magic in a bottle. Came up like a brand new toilet. Great stuff!’
Well, that’s us sold – we reckon this product is well worth a try, especially as it’s only £2.
But if you don’t fancy nipping to Wilko, there are some other techniques to get rid of limescale. Try these first…
White vinegar
Vinegar helps to break down limescale, so if you’ve got a bottle handy, pour on to the affected area, scrub in with a toilet brush, then leave over night.
Cola
Weird, we know, but apparently this works. Same method – guide a bottle of Coke around the rim of the toilet bowl, ensuring everything’s covered. Leave for at least an hour, then give your toilet a flush.
The fizzy liquid should have loosened the limescale, so it will either come away in the flush or with a bit of light scrubbing.
Vinegar and baking soda
To take the white vinegar up a notch, dunk in a tub of baking soda. Leave it to sit, scrub, then flush.
