Engineers are working to ascertain the cause of a sink hole that suddenly appeared on a Newark town centre street and how best to fix it.

Derek Higton, Nottinghamshire County Council’s service director for place and communities, said: “A sink hole appeared over the weekend and temporary traffic lights were put in place to keep motorists safe.

“Severn Trent Water engineers are on site investigating the reason for the sink hole's appearance, and we will look to ensure the road’s repair as quickly as possible.”

The sink hole is near to the pedestrian crossing on Sherwood Avenue at the Baldertongate junction.

Temporary traffic lights remain in place, causing minor disruption to drivers trying tom turn onto Sherwood Avenue from London Road.
