City views highlight art-filled apartment in Central West End

The light-filled apartment Anne Schuchard occupies in the iconic One Hundred Above the Park building in the Central West End looks out on views of the city.

“On a clear day I can see the top of the Arch, but the bottom is obscured by buildings. The lights of the city are fantastic at night,” she says. The space perfectly fits this city-loving hospitality and interior design professional with a penchant for patterns and color, a love she indulges throughout her one-bedroom abode.

“I moved back to St. Louis a year ago after living in Los Angeles for 20 years. I would love to say I lived by the beach, but I was living just east of Hollywood in Los Feliz. I’ve been a city dweller for so long I wanted to transition into someplace where I felt comfortable,” she says.

“I drove around to look at different buildings. This one stood out. I wanted to be in a building that included a community aspect, which we have with the gym, the pool and party rooms. The layout, and the amount of space here also sold me. The design choices throughout are really impeccable. After doing hospitality design for so long, I now tell my friends living here is like living in a hotel,” she says.

Schuchard returned to St. Louis to work with her dad, Pat, and her stepmother, Carol Croupen Schuchard, to put her management and design skills to use developing new properties and enhance the existing ones they own. The Boo Cat Catering portfolio includes the historic Bevo Mill in Dutchtown; the Majorette, an event space in Maplewood; and the Boo Cat Club in the Academy neighborhood. She is currently working on a new place with a more recent history that’s under the Boo Cat umbrella.

She found the home she was looking for in the Central West End. “What I really liked about Central West End is that it’s a walkable neighborhood. There are so many nice shops and restaurants nearby, plus it’s super-convenient for me to get to work,” she says.

Schuchard’s choices for her art-filled apartment include vintage furniture, glassware and objects d’art, all mixed in with new. She layers pattern on pattern in pillows, rugs, textiles and bedding. Her own paintings and artwork hang with art from family and friends.

“I have paintings here by my dad and artwork by his wife, Carol. I have a framed photograph by my mother — she studied photography in art school and is a wonderful photographer. My brother Alex Schuchard is a painter in New York. I have a couple of his pieces hanging up, and he’ll probably kill me because they’re older works, but they’ve been with me for a long time.”

Shuchard’s love of color and pattern began when she studied fashion design at Washington University. “I took a surface and pattern design class where we made hand-dyed and hand printed textiles and I loved it. That style transitioned into my work in painting and in interiors,” she says. “I very much like the colors in vintage textiles.

“They’re what I call ‘awkwardly pretty’ color combinations.”

After she graduated, Schuchard moved to Los Angeles where she continued painting and jewelry design while working in hospitality and management at Starbucks for a while. She eventually moved into interior design, working for an international architecture firm that focused mainly on high-end hospitality and residential buildings.

“I spent a lot of time building color schemes and choosing furniture, fixtures, wallpapers, any hard surface materials, and fabrics,” she says.

Shortly before she moved to St. Louis, she and her dad made a few changes at Das Bevo, upgrading the women’s bathroom with custom patterned tiles in classic blue and white colors. They redesigned a staircase, enlivening it with paintings and fixtures. The projects were immensely satisfying, though small, for Anne.

With her move into One Hundred Above the Park she created an intensely personal space just right for her and her French bulldog, Penny.
